Dallas ISD coaches get deep about their jobs and why representing the city matters

Nicke Smith of Kimball boys basketball and Jason Todd of South Oak Cliff football discussed the impact of Black coaches in Texas high school sports.

In February, Dallas Morning News high school sports reporters Myah Taylor and Ronald Harrod Jr. sat down with two Dallas ISD coaches — Nicke Smith of Kimball boys basketball and Jason Todd of South Oak Cliff football — for a discussion about coaching in Dallas.

The coaches, winners of multiple state championships in their respective sports, talked about challenges they faced as young coaches, obstacles they’ve overcome and lessons they’ve learned.

They also discussed their programs' importance to their communities and the impact Black coaches can have in Texas high school sports.
