Under Tuesday’s sunny sky along the Stemmons Corridor, The Salvation Army of North Texas broke ground on its 21-acre campus.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a new era for the nonprofit, which plans to revolutionize the way it serves the community, said Commissioner Kelly Igleheart of The Salvation Army.
The campus will have an emergency shelter, inpatient and outpatient addiction recovery programs, shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sex trafficking, housing for veterans and family services, including onsite childcare, an onsite integrated medical, dental and behavioral health clinic.
The project is part of the Salvation Army’s $212.7 million One Army, Many Fronts campaign.
Robert Rowling, CEO of TRT Holdings, Omni Hotels’ holding company, donated the land for the campus.
Wearing a helmet and holding a shovel, council member Omar Narvaez, capital campaign co-chairs Michal Powell and Bernie DiFiore, capital campaign executive officer Lieutenant Colonel Bill Mockabee, commissioner Kelly Iglehart, advisory board chair Mark Schortman, area commanders majors Paul and Dawn McFarland and senior director of community relations, Christina Cavalier were part of the ‘first dig’ during the ceremony.

‘Essential kits,’ which include toothbrushes, shampoos, deodorants, shaving cream and other goodies, were given to all the attendees. They were asked to share them with someone who might need them. The packages included a note: The Salvation Army is here for you. Need help? Call one of these numbers.
