An Irving man is facing several charges after fleeing police and causing a fatal crash early Saturday, according to Grand Prairie police.
Llonis Arevalo, 26, is facing charges of murder, evading arrest causing death as well as resisting arrest and collision involving death, according to a news release. Police also said he is a documented gang member who was out on bond with Dallas County for several felony offenses, such as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a habitation.
Police said Arevalo is in custody at Grand Prairie jail. It’s not immediately clear if he has an attorney.
An officer was patrolling in the 1100 block of E. Main Street at around 1:45 a.m. when he observed a Chevrolet Camaro. Police said the driver, Arevalo, attempted to lose sight of the officer upon seeing him.
The officer, who believed the vehicle was freshly stolen, then attempted to do a traffic stop for an observed traffic violation. Shortly after, Arevalo fled police and sparked a pursuit onto eastbound Interstate 30, according to a news release.
As the vehicle began to exit the Hampton Road South exit, it struck a stranded vehicle and caused serious injuries to the other driver, according to police. This unidentified driver was transported to a local trauma center, where they died.
Jason Evans, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson, said first responders were notified of a crash at about 2 a.m.
Following the crash, Arevalo and a enger also exited their vehicle and fled on foot, according to police. They said officers were able to arrest Arevalo, though the enger was not located.
Arevalo also informed officers that he ingested fentanyl and was transported to a local hospital at his request, police said. They said he was treated and released.
