Greyhound plans September opening for new Dallas station

Service out of its Lamar Street location downtown will continue until then.

Greyhound expects to begin operating out of a new Dallas terminal this fall, after more than 70 years of the national bus company serving customers downtown.

The facility at 9755 Harry Hines Blvd. is just across from Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s Bachman Station. It will allow Greyhound and German parent company Flix to expand their footprint, eventually introducing new routes to and from the city, CEO Kadir Boysan previously told The Dallas Morning News.

It is expected to open in late September.

Greyhound has operated out of its downtown station at 205 S. Lamar St. since the mid-1940s. Its lease on the space was set to expire last October, when Dallas real estate developer and businessman Ray Washburne finalized a deal to buy the property. The arrangement extended Greyhound’s lease, giving the intercity bus operator time to relocate.

The Dallas station is one of several across the country that have shuttered. Flix’s 2021 acquisition of Greyhound did not include the properties the bus company was operating out of. It signed lease agreements for more than 30 sites that were sold to venture capital firm Twenty Lake Holdings.

As Greyhound’s leases have begun expiring, the company has closed stations across the U.S., many of which have been in place for decades. Stations have often occupied prime real estate in city centers, offering high resale value.

Although the new Dallas location is not as centralized as the Lamar Street station, Greyhound has said the move near Bachman was intended to maintain connectivity to existing public transit.

Elderly, disabled and low-income engers without easy access to other means of travel often rely on intercity buses to reach their destinations.

“This new terminal offers better connectivity for DFW-area travelers and reflects our commitment to multimodal solutions — linking our services with public transit and other transportation modes to create a more seamless and convenient travel experience,” Boysan said in a statement.

Dallas City Council member Omar Narvaez called the move a “win for multimodal connectivity.”

“Its location — steps from the DART Bachman Station and with immediate access to I-35 and Northwest Highway — creates a powerful synergy that will benefit travelers throughout the region, providing them greater access to affordable, reliable long-distance transportation,” Narvaez said.

Company leadership said last fall that Greyhound had been in talks with DART ing the East Transfer Center in the Central Business District for pickups and drop-offs to maintain a downtown presence.

A Flix spokesperson on Monday declined to confirm if talks are ongoing.

Washburne plans to revamp the Lamar Street site as part of a larger downtown redevelopment plan. The 26,000-square-foot property is worth $2.8 million, according to the Dallas Central Appraisal District.
