Driver data in nearly 300,000 crash reports exposed in TxDOT breach

The agency send letters to impacted residents.

The personal data of hundreds of thousands of Texans was compromised during a breach of Texas Department of Transportation data, the agency said Friday.

An was used to improperly access and nearly 300,000 crash reports containing driver information such as names, driver’s license numbers, license plate data, car insurance policy numbers and other data.

Notification is not legally required, but the agency took “proactive steps” to send letters to impacted individuals, TxDOT said in a statement about the breach.

The agency said it is implementing additional security measures on s to prevent similar incidents, and the breach is under investigation. TxDOT did not immediately respond to questions about the breach Friday evening.
