Letters to the Editor — Helping Gaza, endangered species, sensitive data, Biden’s health

Readers urge helping Gaza’s people; question the Endangered Species Act; want our sensitive data protected; and claim Democrats were not trasparent about Joe Biden’s health.

Gaza needs aid now

As the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza worsens by the day, silence is no longer an option. Over a million people — half of them children — are at risk of starvation and disease, trapped in a war zone with no reliable access to food, water or medical care.

The United States, and our elected officials such as Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, have a moral responsibility to act. That means demanding an immediate ceasefire, ensuring that humanitarian aid is allowed into Gaza without obstruction and conditioning U.S. military on the protection of civilians and compliance with international law.

ment

This is not about politics — it’s about basic human rights. No child should die from hunger while the world watches.

Days are numbered

Re: “Senators press agencies on revising ‘harm’ — Democratic lawmakers question proposed rule, industry’s role in draft," May 6 news story.

You are Fred the Ferret. Your species is on the endangered list due to the Endangered Species Act.

ment

Developers want to lay waste to your last remaining habitat, a local forest. If this happens you and every other ferret will die. You and your entire species will become extinct.

But this would not be considered “harm” under a new Trump istration rule. “Harm” would be redefined to mean intentionally killing or hurting you, Fred the Ferret, a particular animal, reflecting the “single, best meaning” of the word “harm.” Surprise! This tortured redefinition of a simple word with a common meaning would benefit those who cut down forests, mine, drill and put up parking lots.

How about the single, best meaning of the word “species”? The statute has never been about protecting you, Fred the Ferret. That’s why it’s called the Endangered Species Act.

If your view of the world is contrary to long-standing, well-established definitions of common language in pesky statutes and regulations, then just change the definitions! That’s how corporations came to be “persons” in 2010, because the common definition of a person was inconvenient.

Sorry Fred, your days are numbered.

Grandkids are the best

Re: “Grandchildren are made of magic — Grandpa is stunned to discover a place in his heart he didn’t know existed," by Christopher de Vinck, May 17 Opinion.

ment

Thank you, Mr. de Vinck, for your column as many of us are enjoying the “grand” experience. My youngest grandson pulled my heartstrings when I learned he told a classmate that he couldn’t be his best friend because “Pops was already his best buddy.”

Elephant questions

Could someone please address the elephant in the room? Why do Republicans not want to impose higher taxes on multimillionaires and billionaires? How does this party staunchly promote Christian values and yet not feed and house the poor?

ment

There needs to be greater push back from journalists and countrymen concerning not only income inequality but the people and policies that promote and it.

Expose health cover-up

I am old enough to when the Democrats, with the willing cooperation of the media, covered up Franklin D. Roosevelt’s health issues. Now they have been shown to be at it again.

ment

So they come out now with the news that former President Joe Biden has an advanced form of cancer. Sorry, guys, but based on the very obvious and now confirmed news that the Democrats were downplaying and covering up his mental situation, how can we believe that they were not covering up his physical health?

How can Americans have any confidence in their word? The simple answer is to expose by name, rank and serial number all of those who did all the misinformation cover-up and throw them out of any public position of trust. For the good of democracy and for the good of the Democratic Party, they must be held able.

My country returns

I am an 89-year-old who thought I might never see the return of my country. By the grace of God, and President Donald Trump, I have.

DOGE not in my interest

The world order established at the end of World War II has lasted 80 years. I’ve lived almost seven of those eight decades, and I believe we’re safer and more prosperous when the United States leads a coalition of economic, political and military allies.

I have a difficult time believing that Donald Trump, Elon Musk or a bunch of DOGE “summer hires” have the interests of our nation or the interests of my children and grandchildren at heart.

Phone calls never end

What happened to the Do Not Call Registry? I have gotten, and continue to get, telephone calls wanting me to change my Medicare coverage, which I cannot as they are part of my retirement plan. Someone has supplied phone numbers for people to call to try to get them to sign up for extra services.

Does anyone know how to stop all these calls? Also, I am getting what is being identified as “Spam Risk” calls, which I was not getting before this phone blitz started.
