FRISCO — Cowboys starting cornerback Trevon Diggs could lose $500,000 of his $9 million base salary for failing to attend at least 84% of the team’s offseason workouts, a person with knowledge of the contract told The Dallas Morning News on Tuesday.
It hasn’t been determined if the Cowboys will detract money from Diggs’ base salary.
Diggs attended the first day of the three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. If Diggs attends all three days, which is expected, it still would not satisfy a workout clause in his contract because of his previous absences. While offseason programs are voluntary, some players have clauses in their contracts to compel them to participate, whether they’re injured or healthy.
Diggs, who is recovering from left knee surgery, is rehabbing away from the Cowboys’ team facility at The Star. Diggs is progressing but apparently is more comfortable doing his rehab elsewhere.
On the surface, team officials haven’t made an issue of Diggs working away from the facility.
He’s been seen by team doctors when he’s not working out in Florida. On Tuesday morning, coach Brian Schottenheimer said Diggs did some rehab work with Britt Brown, the Cowboys’ director of rehabilitation.
Diggs walked onto the field and watched the first day of the minicamp practice.
“Doing good, same thing,” Schottenheimer said. “Came in for a re-check, doing good and we’ll figure out when we get to training camp. There’s still a big window of time between now and when we get out there. He’s hitting the markers he needs to hit.”
Diggs didn’t speak with reporters Tuesday.
The cornerback suffered a torn ACL in his left knee early in the 2023 season. He returned to start the 2024 season on time, but injured his left knee again, causing him to miss the last six games.
Diggs underwent a complex surgery called a chondral tissue graft that replaced damaged cartilage in ts with tissue.
It’s uncertain when Diggs will return.
“It’s extremely difficult for Diggs,” said defensive end Micah Parsons, who is close to Diggs. “I actually had to fly out there to check on him. ”He was like, ‘Bro you got to come visit me.’ I think he was getting a little bit lonely. I went out there to check on him, man, and the things I felt like he wasn’t doing, I got on him and the things that he was doing, I him.”
Diggs is considered one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. He led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021. But in the last two seasons, he played in just 13 games and has three interceptions.
