The Knicks delivered a shock to the basketball world on Tuesday when they dismissed head coach Tom Thibodeau after he led New York to its first conference finals appearance since 2000.
Late Tuesday night, another surprise. According to a report by NBA insider Marc Stein, the Knicks are said to be interested in Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd for their newly open coaching gig.
According to Stein, who cites league sources, Kidd and Rockets head coach Ime Udoka have both garnered interest from the Knicks, despite currently working for other teams. Stein reports that an interview request to the Rockets would “categorically ... be rejected” and that “a similar response would be expected from the Mavericks.” Several other candidates who are currently unattached to other teams are also listed as the next possible head coach in New York.
Kidd has two years remaining on his contract after g an extension in 2024.
Kidd was one of the favorites for the Knicks coaching job in 2020 and interviewed for the position before the job went to Thibodeau. New York is led by former Maverick Jalen Brunson, whom Kidd coached in Dallas during the 2021-22 season.
Kidd also spent his final season as a player with the Knicks, playing 76 games in New York in 2012-13.
