Dallas approves Wings practice facility, reveals renderings

The WNBA team will move into a $55 million practice facility in Far West Oak Cliff’s Joey Georgusis Park.

Come next spring, the Dallas Wings will officially have a presence in their namesake city.

The Dallas City Council voted 12-2 on Wednesday to approve building the WNBA team a $55 million practice facility in Far West Oak Cliff’s Joey Georgusis Park. The undeveloped park land at 1200 North Cockrell Hill Road will also include the Wings’ offices, soccer fields for pro women’s soccer team Dallas Trinity FC and other elements intended to encourage sports development in the area.

“This project represents more than just one team,” Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said during a news conference after the vote. “It reflects our commitment to growing a professional women’s sports culture in Dallas that includes basketball, soccer and hopefully even more.”

Wednesday was a big step for the city and the Wings, who expected to move to Memorial Auditorium in 2026 under a 15-year, $19 million use agreement that also included the construction of a practice facility.

Delays to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center redevelopment pushed back the team’s move-in date to at least 2027, but the April 2024 agreement with the Wings still meant the city had to provide the practice facility on time.

And that’s what’s scheduled to happen. The facility will open in April 2026 in time for next season’s training camp, Wings CEO and managing partner Greg Bibb said Wednesday.

He said the facility will feature two practice courts; the latest in basketball-related technology; professional locker rooms and wellness space; a strength and conditioning area; family and mother’s rooms for working moms; community spaces and other amenities.

“We will do our part to not only serve and be a presence while training in West Oak Cliff, while playing in downtown and while serving the community throughout the City of Dallas,” Bibb said during the news conference.

Dallas Trinity FC founder and CEO Jim Neil echoed the sentiment, saying the organization is “proud to be part of the growing ecosystem of elite women’s athletics in Dallas.”

Bibb told The Dallas Morning News after the news conference that the Wings will continue to play games at UT Arlington’s College Park Center in 2026, while practicing in the new facility “that our world-class female athletes deserve.”

He said the original intent was for the facility to be downtown near the convention center, but the construction timeline axed that possibility.

Instead, the Wings will practice about 8 miles west. It created a win-win situation for the team, which rebuilt its front office ahead of the 2025 season and selected UConn superstar Paige Bueckers No. 1 overall in April’s WNBA draft.

“At the end of the day, sometimes things work out better than what you actually even intended,” Bibb told The News. “Now, we get to really impact the Dallas community in two distinct geographic locations. Not only downtown, where we can play our games in a remodeled Memorial Auditorium, but also now in West Oak Cliff and Far West Dallas.”
